Using color, icons, and captions makes it much easier to discover patterns, select data for further analysis and transformation, and create compelling visualizations. Categories, relationships, property values, and tags are assigned colors automatically. At any time, you can change the color and icon assigned to a category, and the color assigned to a relationship, tag, or property value. You can also:

  • Label nodes with captions derived from the values of a property of a category.

  • Scale the size of nodes of a given category by a property value.

Selecting a color

You can set a color for a category, relationship, tag, or property value using the list in the Legend.

You can also select a new color for a category or relationship in the Project panel’s Category or Relationship tab. Select a category (or relationship) and click its colored circle (or rectangle) to display the color picker.

To select a color:

  1. Go to the Legend and click the Category, Relationship, Tag, or Property tab.

  2. Locate the item in the list, or for a Property, select a property name from the dropdown menu and then locate the list item for one of its values.

  3. Click the colored dot or line at the right of the item to display a color picker. (A Category item will also display the icon sheet below the color choices.)

  4. Click to select a color.
The new color is applied, and the picker closes.

Selecting an icon

A category can include an icon as well as a color. You select an icon using the Legend, in the same way you select a color. The icon is colored with your current color choice.

To change the icon sheet for a project, go to Project -> Settings and select the new sheet from the Icon Sheet menu at the bottom of the panel.

To select an icon for a Category:

  1. Go to the Legend and click the Category tab.

  2. Locate the Category in the list (e.g. Episode) and click the colored dot at the right to display a combined color picker and icon sheet.

  3. Click to select an icon for the Category.
The new icon is applied to all the nodes of the Category, colored with your current color choice, and the picker closes.

Applying captions to nodes or edges

You can select one or more properties of a category or relationship whose values will be used as captions. The caption appears when its node or edge is close enough to your virtual viewpoint, and disappears when you navigate further away.

In the Projects panel and Settings tab, you can:

  • Adjust the size scale of captions. Use the Caption Size Scale slider to adjust the text size of captions.

  • Enable the Multi-Language Caption checkbox. GraphXR will then accept text property values that include the full UTF-8 character set as captions. This means that you can display captions in a wide variety of modern languages. With the checkbox de-selected, GraphXR accepts only text in the ASCII character set as captions.

To apply captions:

  1. Go to the Project panel and Category or Relationship tab.

  2. Click a Category or Relationship (for example, Episode) to display its properties.

  3. Click the AsCaption checkbox for the property to be used as a caption (e.g. title). The checkbox is available for any property.

If you select more than one property, the caption displays in the order you select the properties in the Property Name list. For example, a caption that includes the Episode’s property values for season, episode, and title appears as follows:

Scaling node size or edge width by a property value

You can select a property of a category or relationship whose value will be used to scale the size of its nodes or edges, respectively.

For example, using data for HBO’s Game of Thrones television series, the season (e.g. season 1, 2, 3, etc.) property is selected to scale the size of the Episode category of nodes. This results in progressively larger sizes for Episode nodes associated with each new broadcast season.

The Node Size Scale and Edge Width Scale sliders in the Settings tab determines the basic size of all nodes and edges, respectively. From there, nodes can receive increasing sizes and edges increasing widths scaled to the values of a selected property.

To scale nodes or edges by a property value:

  1. Go to the Project panel and Category or Relationship tab.

  2. Select a category or relationship (for example, the Episode category).

  3. For a category, click the Node Size checkbox for the property to be used to scale node size (e.g. numLines).

For a relationship, click the Bind Width checkbox for the property (e.g. spoke)

Although Node Size or Bind Width checkboxes are available for any property, a property with numerical values (as opposed to text) produces more obvious visual results.
