Hiding Data

Hiding nodes temporarily can be useful for focusing on subsets of graph data that you may want to work with. You can:

  • Use Hide Selection to hide selected nodes temporarily, and Show Hidden Nodes to restore hidden nodes.

  • Use the Leaf Trimming keyboard toggle (Ctrl+L) to temporarily hide and then restore nodes that have a given number of connected edges (or hops) in the graph.

  • Deselect the Visible checkbox for a category or relationship to temporarily hide nodes of a category or edges of a relationship.

  • Select the Exclude checkbox for any property of a category or relationship to temporarily exclude it from the data.

Using Hide Selection and Show Hidden Nodes

Hiding and restoring hidden data is available using the right-click menu’s Actions>Hide and Actions>Show Hidden options, as well as in the Hide selection and Show Hidden Nodes toolbar icons which appear next to each other in the context menu.

  • Hide Selection appears only when nodes are selected. Click to hide selected nodes.

  • Once you hide nodes, the Show Hidden Nodes icon appears. Click to restore all the hidden nodes and edges to the graph, update the total counts in the legend lists, and de-select the data.

To hide nodes:

  1. Select nodes using any selection method.

  2. Click the Hide Selection icon in the context toolbar, or right-click and select Actions>Hide.
The selected nodes (and any connected edges) are hidden, and the Show Hidden Nodes icon appears in the toolbar.
Hidden nodes and edges are temporarily subtracted from the lists in the legend.

  3. You can keep selecting and hiding data , which is added to whatever has already been hidden. The Hide Selection icon appears only when one or more nodes are selected.

To restore hidden nodes:

  • Click the Show Hidden Nodes icon in the context toolbar, or right-click and select Actions>Show Hidden.
All hidden nodes are restored, and the number of nodes and edges visible in the graph is updated in the lists in the legend.

Using Leaf Trimming

Leaf trimming can be used to temporarily hide nodes that have a given number of connected edges (or hops) in the graph. It operates on all the visible data. A keyboard toggle control (Ctrl+L) is provided which temporarily hides and restores leaf-trimmed nodes in a stepwise sequence.

To use leaf trimming:

  1. Click in an empty part of the project space to deselect all visible data.

  2. Press Ctrl+L to hide nodes which are either unconnected or connected by only one edge.
The Show Hidden Nodes icon appears (if no other nodes are already hidden).

  3. Press Ctrl+L again to restore all the leaf-trimmed nodes.
The Show Hidden Nodes icon disappears (if no other nodes are already hidden).

  4. Press Ctrl+L to hide nodes in step 1 plus the additional remaining nodes connected by only one edge.
The Show Hidden Nodes icon re-appears.

  5. Press Ctrl+L again to restore all the leaf-trimmed nodes.
    - You can repeat the Ctrl+L toggle control as many times as you like until all nodes have been hidden.
    - At any point, you can click the Show Hidden Nodes toolbar icon or the right-click Actions>Show Hidden item to restore all the hidden nodes and reset the leaf trimming sequence.

Show Hidden Nodes restores all hidden nodes, not just those hidden in leaf trimming steps. You may want to start the leaf trimming process with no nodes already hidden.

Hiding data by Category or Relationship

By default, nodes and edges in the graph are visible. You can hide all data temporarily for a category or relationship by clicking the Visible checkbox for an entity in the Category or Relationship tab of the Project panel.

  • For a category, all its nodes as well as the connected edges disappear from the view, and both the category name and the name of its relationships disappear from the list in the legend.

  • For a relationship, all its edges disappear from the graph space, and the relationship name disappears from the list in the legend. Nodes connected to the edges remain in the graph space.

To hide data by Category or Relationship:

  1. Open the Project panel and Category (or Relationship) tab.

  2. Click a category or relationship label to select it.

  3. Un-check the Visible checkbox.

The nodes (or edges) for the selected category or relationship disappear from the graph space. To display data for the entity again, simply click its Visible checkbox.

Excluding Property data

You can exclude any property for a category or relationship temporarily by clicking its Exclude checkbox in the Category or Relationship tab of the Project panel.

To exclude a property of a category or relationship:

  1. Open the Project panel and Category (or Relationship) tab.

  2. Click a category or relationship label to select it.

  3. Locate one or more properties you want to exclude, and click the Exclude checkbox(es).

Excluded properties no longer appear in information panels or tables.
