Before You Begin…

Ideally, you’ll have worked through Module 8. Layouts and Pinning. If you’re starting here, and you want to follow along, you’ll need to:

  • Log in to GraphXR, create a Project, and open its graph space.

  • Download starting data (HowTo_09_START.graphxr) for this module and drag and drop it onto the graph space.  

  • Optionally, download the file  https://kineviz.com/s/GXR_QSG.zip, which contains the Game of Thrones data we’re using in our tutorials

The preferred format for a date and time stamp in GraphXR is YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss.

If you load date and time data in a different format, GraphXR may have trouble recognizing it. You can reformat the data using presets in Transform=>f(x).

In the Transform panel => f(x) tab select the category (Episodes) and property (episodeAirDate) that has the date-time data you need to transform. Visit https://momentjs.com/docs/ for further information on data and time formulas.

Select preset toDate or convertCustomDate formulas to convert dates to a format GraphXR recognizes. Enter a new property name for the converted data.  A sample result appears below. Now click Test to test the transformation or Run to perform it.

Once your data is properly formatted, GraphXR offers several methods for working with time series  data. Here, the Parametric layout has been used to distribute episodes on the X axis by their episodeAirDate.

You can also position nodes according to time series in the Layout panel => Geometric tab by  enabling  Order by Property.

You can also work with time series in the Filter panel. Select a range as you would with any numeric property. Use the handles or enter a precise value in the Min / Max fields.

Check Fixed Range to treat your current range like a video playhead. You can scrub forwards or backwards by dragging either handle.
